I've spent 25+ years building and protecting enterprise technology, leading IT security and infrastructure teams across regulated life sciences manufacturing, federal government, and global education environments. My work sits at the intersection of security strategy, hands-on engineering, and business leadership: risk and compliance programs, incident response, network and datacenter architecture, and the people who make all of it run.

Outside of the day job, I'm a technology hobbyist. I operate my own independently registered internet number resources, hold an amateur radio license, run a home lab that has long since stopped being "home-sized," and lend hosting, networking, and security help to community projects. Details on all of it below.

Some of the most satisfying work I do is unpaid. Time, equipment, money, and a fair number of weekends go to community groups around the Fox Valley: veterans' organizations, the local food pantry, and others that need a hand. Most of it comes down to rebuilding networks that have been held together with whatever was cheapest at the time, which happens to be a problem I enjoy. It is the same work I get paid for, done for people who cannot buy it.

Security programs, risk management, and compliance in regulated environments: frameworks like the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and ISO 27001, audits, and board-level reporting. Modernization usually means replacing something old and load-bearing without an outage anyone notices, so the sequencing and the rollback plan matter more than the technology on the invoice.

  • Dual-stack from day one. Native IPv6 alongside IPv4, with RPKI route origin authorizations covering everything announced.
  • A foot in 44 net. ARDC assigned me 44.30.206.0/24 out of the AMPRNet space set aside for amateur radio digital experimentation. It is announced from AS402766 alongside my own prefixes, routed to the lab, and paired with a dedicated IPv6 /64 so services on it run dual-stack.
  • IPv6 taken seriously. I hold Sage, the highest tier of the Hurricane Electric IPv6 certification program. Every critical external service on this network answers over v6: web, mail, authoritative DNS, and registrar glue. Everything here is built dual-stack and reachable over v6 by intent rather than by accident.
  • Operated like production. Monitored, documented, and hardened, using the same discipline I bring to enterprise networks, applied at hobbyist scale.
  • Why bother? Because the best way to truly understand BGP, addressing policy, and the routing ecosystem is to hold your own resources and run them yourself.

Amateur Extra class licensed operator in grid square EN51uu (Batavia, Illinois). Where RF meets IP: I operate HF through UHF, run local APRS infrastructure, and support the amateur radio community's presence on the internet.

Primary rig is a Yaesu FT-710 AESS covering 80m through 6m from home, feeding a Gap Challenger vertical and a G5RV. Lately most active on digital modes, primarily FT8 and JS8Call.

Local and mobile

I am most active locally on VHF/UHF voice, usually monitoring the Fox River Radio League W9CEQ repeaters and other popular local machines. Base station is a Yaesu FTM-400 on a well-elevated Comet GP6, with a TYT TH-9000D covering 1.25m and a Yaesu FT5D as the go-to handheld. DMR-capable too, via an Anytone AT-D878UVII Plus.

Mobile: a Yaesu FTM-200 in the truck, second band parked on APRS for road-trip tracking.

APRS infrastructure

I run a local-coverage APRS digipeater [K9MEV-1] and igate [K9MEV-10] serving the general Batavia area: a Yaesu FT-2900 with an Argent Data OT2m tracker and a Raspberry Pi running Xastir, with home-built relay automation for remote management. Fairly active on APRS with several trackers in rotation.

Portable and homebrew

Portable HF runs on a Yaesu FT-710 in a custom go-kit, Buddipole antenna, and a custom battery pack in an ammo-can case. A home-built uBITX transceiver occasionally makes it on the air as well.

On the receive side: a Diamond D3000N discone on a multicoupler feeding various scanners and receivers, plus a dedicated ADS-B receiver reporting to FlightAware.

satellites

Amateur satellites

Working the birds portable: an Alaskan Arrow dual-band yagi, a handheld, and a set of Doppler-corrected memories. The FM birds and the linear transponders, which give you an eleven-minute window if the geometry is kind and considerably less if it is not.

AMSAT life member. The same orbital mechanics that put a booster back on a barge also drag a repeater across Illinois faster than you can retune, which is most of the fun.

A routed 44Net subnet at home

A complete build guide for getting a routed 44Net (AMPRNet) subnet into a home lab: WireGuard tunnels to two 44Net Connect points of presence, BGP on MikroTik RouterOS 7, policy routing, and a firewall that will not embarrass you. Ten redacted and annotated figures from the real deployment, a topology diagram, and every BGP filter clause explained line by line.

Written for an operator with technical depth but limited routing experience. Announced to the AMPRNet Connect mailing list, where several people have since deployed from it successfully. MIT licensed.

HERMES: text messages that do not need the internet

System design whitepaper for a dual-transport emergency messaging appliance built from a Raspberry Pi and a QRP Labs QMX transceiver. It passes ARRL radiograms and short messages over the internet when there is one, and falls back to HF using JS8Call when there is not, with store and forward, intermediate relay, and verifiable delivery throughout.

Covers the hardware, the protocol and its conformance vectors, the security and identity model, the regulatory reading, and measured throughput from a working implementation. Revision 2.2, revised against the code rather than written ahead of it.

Self-hosting

Web, DNS, mail, and services for this domain and friends' projects, because the best way to stay sharp is to run it yourself. A redundant authoritative BIND pair, a hardened Postfix and Dovecot mail server, web, monitoring, and a public status page.

All of it is documented as though someone else might have to take it over, which is the only thing keeping a hobby platform from quietly becoming a liability. Dual-stack throughout, since IPv6 stops being intimidating once you are forced to live on it.

Discrete electronics

Electronics was the original career plan before networks and security took over, and the bench never went away. Discrete circuits, microcontrollers, sensors, homebrew radio kits, battery packs, antenna work, and the occasional repair that turns into a full rebuild.

Half the appeal is the diagnosis: reading a schematic, chasing a fault down to a single component, and then deciding whether to fix the thing or build a better one. Currently on the bench, a PiDP-11, a working front panel replica of a DEC PDP-11/70 that runs period operating systems behind the blinkenlights.

Security tinkering

Lab environments for testing hardware, software, tools, techniques, hardening, and defenses before they ever touch production anywhere. Isolated segments, deliberately weak targets, and packet capture to see what a control actually does rather than what the datasheet claims.

It is also where the bad ideas go first. Anything I would rather not discover live gets discovered here instead, on equipment nobody is depending on and at an hour of my own choosing.

Experimenting with legacy hardware

A working collection spanning three decades of architecture: 286, 386, and Pentium era x86, DEC Alpha, and a set of Sun workstations covering the SPARCstation 5, Ultra 1, Ultra 5, Blade 1500, and a Sun Ray thin client. Every one of them boots.

The value is in the experimenting rather than the owning. Standing up Solaris on real SPARC, or watching how a 64-bit Alpha approached problems years before x86 arrived there, teaches you things a modern virtual machine quietly hides. A preserved machine that has not been switched on in ten years is a rumor. These get switched on.

Weather monitoring

An Ambient Weather WS-2000 station watches the local sky from Batavia: a full outdoor sensor array plus dedicated lightning, soil, and air-quality sensors reporting to a live console indoors.

That feeds a weather page I built for this site: current conditions, forecasts, radar and satellite, river gauges, air quality, space weather, climate normals, and a computed sky chart, with no JavaScript and no third-party requests. markvd.net/weather

The station also reports to Ambient Weather Network, where the live dashboard shows every sensor at once, straight off the console.

Astronomy

A Celestron NexStar 8SE does most of the work, backed by good glass. Also, Celestron SkyMaster 20x80 binoculars on a tripod for wide-field sweeps, and EclipSmart optics for the sun. Planets, comets, and whatever else the sky is doing that month.

The hook was set early. Lying out under a genuinely dark sky as a kid and seeing the Milky Way as a structure rather than a phrase, then putting an eye to a telescope and finding Saturn's rings actually there, exactly as advertised. Not much since has matched it, which is most of the reason the gear keeps coming back out.

spaceflight

Spaceflight

I follow launches closely: NASA missions, SpaceX cadence, and the long-form coverage at NASASpaceflight.com, whose L2 forums remain the best place on the internet to read people who genuinely know what they are looking at. The International Space Station gets tracked overhead whenever a pass is worth stepping outside for.

The historical programs hold my attention as much as the current ones, Apollo above all. Slide rules, core rope memory, a hard deadline, and it worked. The flight journals and mission transcripts are worth reading straight through, if only as a reminder of how many careful decisions got made on far less information than anyone would accept today.

Freshwater aquariums

One 55 gallon tank these days, with a Chinese algae eater, a clown loach, and a few inexpensive goldfish. It used to be a considerably larger operation.

Over the years: a heavily planted guppy tank, plecos including a gold nugget, an albino, a dwarf bristlenose and a sailfin, a pair of oscars with more personality than sense, koi, and others. There is a virtual one too, which needs no water changes: markvd.net/fish

/planetarium, a 3D planetarium in the browser

The whole sky, rendered live in a single page with nothing installed and nothing stored. Real-time positions for the sun, planets, moons, comets and minor planets from DE440 and VSOP87 ephemerides; satellites propagated from current element sets; and the full AT-HYG catalog at roughly 2.5 million stars, layered over deep sky survey imagery served from this network rather than someone else's.

It defaults to Batavia looking south, and goes anywhere by coordinates or city name. Time can be shifted forward and back, constellation figures were drawn from scratch rather than borrowed, and the observing tools include a pass predictor that tells you when the ISS will actually be visible from the ground rather than merely overhead. The entire view state lives in the URL, so any sky you find is a link you can send someone. MIT licensed.

/weather, local conditions in one page

Everything the sky over Batavia is doing, fed by the Ambient Weather WS-2000 on the roof: current conditions, forecasts, radar and satellite, river gauges, air quality, space weather, climate normals, and a computed sky chart.

No JavaScript, no third-party requests, and no widget pulled in from someone else's server. The raw sensor feed also goes to Ambient Weather Network if you want it unfiltered.

time

/clock, world time and both timezone maps

Central and Universal side by side, a slider that moves every clock and both maps together, and a table of world cities that gets daylight saving right for whatever date you drag to rather than for today.

The world map is drawn on the Equal Earth projection, so areas are true and Greenland is the size of Greenland. Daylight on it is computed from the sun's actual position at the selected instant, terminator and all, and the US map splits out all six zones. Coastlines from Natural Earth, timezone arithmetic from your own browser, nothing stored.

A planted community aquarium drawn entirely in code. No images, no sprites, nothing loaded from anywhere. Twelve peaceful species with real behavior: tetras that actually school, corydoras that surface for a gulp of air, kuhli loaches that hide all day and come out at night, and a pleco that grazes visible tracks through the algae on the front glass.

Feed it, scrape the glass, or leave it running in a background tab. The light follows Central time, the water chemistry drifts, the plants spread and pearl, and nothing in it can ever die.
